ABORTION PILLS: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

What is the Abortion Pill?

The “abortion pill” is the common name for 2 medications used in combination to terminate pregnancy: mifepristone and misoprostol. Mifepristone blocks the hormone progesterone, which stops the pregnancy from progressing. Misoprostol causes the uterus to contract to expel the amniotic sac and fetus, therefore initiating bleeding and cramping.

When is the abortion performed?

The abortion pill is FDA approved for up to 10 weeks gestation and may be used up to the 6th week in the state of Florida. The first pill is typically taken at the abortion clinic after an ultrasound confirms how far along a woman is into her pregnancy.

The second pill is taken at home, and it is encouraged for a woman to have someone aware of her procedure so they can get her help if bleeding or cramping becomes concerning. A follow-up appointment with a doctor is necessary after taking the abortion pill to ensure safety. This care should include bloodwork and an ultrasound.

When is the abortion pill not recommended?

  • Ectopic pregnancy
  • Adrenal gland problems
  • Long-term corticosteroid therapy
  • Allergies to mifepristone or similar medications
  • Anemia or bleeding disorder
  • Using blood thinners
  • IUD in place
  • Inherited porphyria

Can I buy abortion pills online?

It is against the law in Florida to obtain abortion medications from any source other than a medical provider during an in-person consultation. Buying any medications online is dangerous and against the law. It is illegal for any abortion-inducing drugs to be sent through the mail.
